The Book chronicles the tumultuous life of Maya Isaacs, beginning with her rebellious youth in Durban, South Africa, and her strained relationship with her single father, Samuel. Driven by a desire to find her destiny and true identity, Maya is lured into the criminal organization The Alternative Lifestyle Club (The ALC) by Craig and its leader, Ms. Diana, leading to her involvement in stealing, drug trafficking, and prostitution, culminating in her arrest. While in prison, Maya has a change of heart and is later released through the influence of Van Brussels, a victim of one of her crimes, who sends her to the United States for secretarial studies and later employs her. After marrying Daniel Young, Maya returns to South Africa to find her father, only to discover he committed suicide years earlier, which motivates her to use her success to found The True Lifestyle for Juveniles from Broken and Disadvantaged Homes (TLJ), an NGO dedicated to helping at-risk youth avoid the path she once took.
